Hudson Chip Seal Service Seal Cracks & Extend Pavement Life

Chip-seal surfacing is a cost-effective remedy for roads with minor issues resulting from normal wear and tear. As pavement ages, preservation is key to decrease the likelihood of a small problem quickly becoming larger and more costly. Road-use, temperature fluctuation, and water intrusion can cause roads to become brittle and break. If not caught at the start, these breakages can become dangerous in high-traffic areas.

Chip seals are typically used on a one-time basis but can drastically improve the safety of old road surfaces. Chip seals provide an anti-glare surface when roads are wet, and they act as a reflective surface at night. They also provide a good amount of friction, cutting down on skidding.

What Is a Chip Seal?

A chip seal is formed by applying an asphalt emulsion mixture covered by a layer of densely-packed aggregate. This type of resurfacing seals narrow cracks and helps bind cracked pavement, while protecting the structure of the underlying pavement. A chip seal is ideal for roads that have minor cracks but still have an acceptable ride quality. This option would be used until a more permanent resurfacing application could be performed.
